Hi, Donald Trump has pledged to deport 15 to 20 million people beginning when he takes office on January 20.1 If he even partially succeeds, it will tear apart countless families and disrupt communities across the country. Deporting millions of our family, friends, and neighbors will not make our communities safe or help people thrive. Congress must act right now to repeal the outdated, xenophobic laws Trump wants to use to implement his horrific mass deportation plan. To undertake his plan, Trump is likely to rely on the Alien Enemies Act (AEA), a rarely-used law from the 1790s.2 The AEA is an outdated and xenophobic war authority that Trump wants to use in peacetime to detain and deport people without regard for human rights or basic due process. In effect, this law allows for state-sanctioned terror and discrimination against immigrants. The AEA was used to justify the internment of Japanese, German, and Italian immigrants during WWII — a horrific chapter in U.S. history that we cannot allow the far right to repeat. The Neighbors Not Enemies Act, introduced by Sen. Mazie Hirono and Rep. Ilhan Omar, would repeal the AEA once and for all, preventing any president from using it to inflict cruelty on immigrant communities. Our lawmakers need to move quickly to protect immigrant communities from arbitrary detention and deportation. Thanks for taking action, Sources:
