John,
At the top of this year, the GOP-led House passed a rules package for the 119th Congress—and it contained an important hint about what lies ahead.
The package fast-tracks twelve bills, and one of them is an anti-choice measure that threatens abortion providers with jail time under the guise of “protecting” infants.
We’ve seen this move before, both at the federal level and in the states. It’s another example of Republicans using the legislative process to drive a false narrative and shift the Overton window, painting pro-choice legislators who don’t support the bill as radical extremists.
Let’s be crystal clear: Doctors already have a legal obligation to provide care for all patients, including infants born at any stage of development.
This bill is not about protecting babies—it’s about undermining abortion access and stoking fear around reproductive healthcare.
Insidious bills like this one are part of a broader strategy to chip away at reproductive freedom one piece of legislation at a time, hoping that we won't notice or fight back.
Just days from now, the new administration will begin, and we’ll be seeing a lot more attacks that anti-choice politicians hope will slide under the radar. They’ve already indicated that they plan to pursue restrictions on abortion medications, funding cuts of reproductive healthcare, and more.
But we won’t look away: our job right now is to support our pro-choice champions in state legislative chambers, city halls, and state courts, who are working tirelessly to protect our communities from the incoming federal attacks.
Every single time that anti-abortion politicians try to undermine our reproductive freedoms, they must be held accountable—so we’re ready to stay loud.
Thanks for your help in this fight,
