A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
As a new year begins, CBTU is already seeing plenty of activity in 2025. A cabinet shuffle ([link removed]) , the Prime Minister's impending resignation, and the proroguing of Parliament have dominated headlines over the last few weeks.

However, despite big changes on the federal political front, CBTU is kicking off the new year with a renewed commitment to advocating for our members, as planned. We're working on campaigns and content for our 2025 conference that will see us going to bat for our members in the media, online, and in person.

Some of our top priorities for this year include securing regulations that guarantee flush toilets on federally regulated construction sites across the country, and expanding funding for the Union Training and Innovation Program to include brick-and-mortar projects.

With an election now firmly in the cards for 2025, we will ensure the voice of the Building Trades is heard loud and clear. Let's make 2025 the year of the worker!

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the horrendous act of terrorism that took please over the holidays, in New Orleans, resulting in 15 deaths and countless injuries. Just a few short months ago, the Building Trades gathered for Tradeswomen Build Nations conference, and our hearts go out to the kind people of New Orleans as they navigate through the aftermath of this event. CBTU stands in solidarity with New Orleans, and we will always stand up to violence and hatred that have no place in our world.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
Next week, Executive Director Sean Strickland and CBTU staff will attend the annual Governing Board of Presidents (GBOP) meetings to align CBTU's advocacy priorities for 2025 with our international affiliates.

PM RESIGNATION ANNOUNCEMENT
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his intention to step down as Liberal Party leader and Prime Minister once a new leader is chosen. CBTU extended our gratitude towards the Prime Minister in a statement, which you can read in its entirety here ([link removed]) .

Under his leadership, we've seen significant investments in unionized workers across the country through the Labour Mobility Deduction for Tradespeople, the Union Training and Innovation Program, and the Investment Tax Credits.

CBTU recognizes the progress that has been made under Prime Minister Trudeau's leadership, and we will continue to work with all parties and political leaders to build a stronger Canada for our members and all skilled tradespeople.

Executive Director Sean Strickland spoke to the Daily Commercial News earlier this week about the impact of the Prime Minister's time in office on the Building Trades.

CABINET SHUFFLE
Three weeks ago, a cabinet shuffle brought changes to ministries CBTU works with closely. CBTU welcomed Minister Dominic LeBlanc as the new Minister of Finance and Minister of Labour Steven MacKinnon, who has now taken on the ministry of Employment and Workforce Development in addition to his existing portfolio. Though Parliament is prorogued until March, CBTU looks forward to continuing our strong partnership with these and other ministries.

DISTINCTION AWARDS NOMINATIONS
Nominations are open for the 2025 CBTU Distinction Awards!

These awards are presented at our annual conference and recognize industry leaders who have made significant contributions to their fields. There are three categories: Workforce Development, Health and Safety, and a Special Award of Distinction.

ONE STEP FORWARD
One Step Forward: An Alliance for Advancing Recovery is made up of Ontario-based trades unions, non-profits, and healthcare advocates. One Step Forward launched last fall, and is supported by the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario.

One Step Forward has created a list of recommendations for the Ontario government in the fight against the opioid crisis, including:
* Establish an emergency task force
* Launch a remote access program
* Reform current compensation and funding models
* Empower pharmacists to hold a larger role in treatment

UN NOTE DU DIRECTEUR EXÉCUTIF
En ce début d'année, le SMCC est déjà très actif en 2025. Un remaniement ministériel, la démission imminente du Premier ministre et la prorogation du Parlement ont fait la une des journaux ces dernières semaines.

Cependant, malgré les changements importants sur le front politique fédéral, le SMCC entame la nouvelle année avec un engagement renouvelé à défendre les intérêts de ses membres, comme prévu. Nous travaillons sur des campagnes et du contenu pour notre conférence de 2025 qui nous permettra de défendre nos membres dans les médias, en ligne et en personne.

Parmi nos principales priorités pour cette année, citons l'obtention d'une réglementation garantissant l'installation de toilettes à chasse d'eau sur les chantiers de construction réglementés par le gouvernement fédéral dans tout le pays, et l'extension du financement du Programme de formation syndicale et d'innovation pour y inclure les projets de construction en dur.

Des élections étant désormais prévues pour 2025, nous veillerons à ce que la voix des métiers de la construction soit entendue haut et fort. Faisons de 2025 l'année du travailleur !

Je tiens à prendre un moment pour saluer l'horrible acte de terrorisme qui a eu lieu pendant les vacances à la Nouvelle-Orléans, faisant 15 morts et d'innombrables blessés. Il y a quelques mois à peine, les métiers du bâtiment se sont réunis pour la conférence Tradeswomen Build Nations, et nous sommes de tout cœur avec les gentils habitants de la Nouvelle-Orléans, qui doivent faire face aux conséquences de cet événement. Le SMCC est solidaire de la Nouvelle-Orléans et nous nous opposerons toujours à la violence et à la haine qui n'ont pas leur place dans notre monde.

ANNONCE DE LA DÉMISSION DU PM
En début de semaine, le Premier ministre Justin Trudeau a annoncé son intention de quitter ses fonctions de chef du Parti libéral et de Premier ministre une fois qu'un nouveau chef aura été choisi. Le SMCC a exprimé sa gratitude envers le Premier ministre dans une déclaration, que vous pouvez lire dans son intégralité ici ([link removed]) .

Sous sa direction, nous avons vu des investissements importants dans les travailleurs syndiqués à travers le pays grâce à la déduction pour la mobilité de la main-d'œuvre pour les gens de métier, le Programme de formation et d'innovation en milieu syndicale, et les crédits d'impôt à l'investissement.

Le SMCC reconnaît les progrès réalisés sous la direction du premier ministre Trudeau, et nous continuerons à travailler avec tous les partis et les dirigeants politiques pour bâtir un Canada plus fort pour nos membres et tous les gens de métier qualifiés.

REMANIEMENT DU CABINET FÉDÉRAL
Il y a trois semaines, un remaniement ministériel a entraîné des changements dans les ministères avec lesquels le SMCC travaille en étroite collaboration. Le SMCC a accueilli le ministre Dominic LeBlanc en tant que nouveau ministre des Finances et le ministre du Travail Steven MacKinnon, qui s'est vu confier le ministère de l'Emploi et du Développement de la main-d'œuvre en plus de son portefeuille actuel. Bien que le Parlement soit prorogé jusqu'en mars, le SMCC se réjouit de poursuivre son partenariat solide avec ces ministères et d'autres.

LES PRIX DE DISTINCTION
Les nominations sont ouvertes pour les Prix de distinction 2025 du SMCC !

Ces prix sont décernés lors de notre conférence annuelle et récompensent les leaders de l'industrie qui ont apporté une contribution significative à leur domaine. Il y a trois catégories : Développement de la main-d'œuvre, Santé et sécurité, et Prix spécial de distinction.

'One Step Forward : An Alliance for Advancing Recovery' est composée de syndicats, d'organisations à but non lucratif et de défenseurs des soins de santé basés en Ontario. One Step Forward a été lancé l'automne dernier et est soutenu par le Conseil provincial des métiers du bâtiment et de la construction de l'Ontario.

One Step Forward a creé une liste de recommandations à l'intention du gouvernement de l'Ontario dans le cadre de la lutte contre la crise des opioïdes :
* Mise en place d'une task force d'urgence
* Lancer un programme d'accès à distance
* Réformer les modèles actuels de rémunération et de financement
* Permettre aux pharmaciens de jouer un rôle plus important dans le traitement
