Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, the number of domestic violence cases in North Carolina have spiked.

 

But after the House of Representatives voted to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, Republicans in the US Senate have refused to take up the bill. 

 

So AG Josh Stein joined a coalition of attorneys general to urge the Senate to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.

 

Stopping violent crimes should not be a political issue, but unfortunately senate Republicans have made it one.

This is the first time since the 1990s that the Congress has not reauthorized Violence Against Women Act upon its termination. 

 

Reauthorization of the Act would provide funds to investigate and prosecute violent crimes against women and declare our government’s commitment to protect people in their own homes.

 

In difficult times, the way we treat those in need says so much about who we are. Josh has always made it a priority to keep people safe from harm -- and reauthorizing this bill would be a step in the right direction.
