The cast of characters Trump has chosen to populate his second term are a Star Wars cantina of fanatics, extremists, conspiracy theorists, sexual harassers, and disreputable no-goods.
The most dangerous of all just might be Kash Patel, Trump’s pick to run the FBI.
Patel isn’t just another MAGA loyalist. He’s a conspiracy theorist and Trump sycophant who has pledged to investigate Trump’s political opponents and “come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens who helped Joe Biden rig the presidential election.”
Patel published a literal enemies list of over 60 Trump detractors who he said should be investigated, including Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Hillary Clinton, Cassidy Hutchinson, and Robert Mueller.

Like so many of Trump’s cabinet picks, Patel has little or no experience in government, let alone expertise in the issues confronting the agency that Trump wants him to lead.
As a young lawyer, I worked in the Justice Department in the years after Watergate.
I saw firsthand the wreckage left by a president who tried to weaponize federal law enforcement as a tool of political retribution against his enemies. It took years to repair the damage that Nixon did. Some would argue that we still haven’t fully healed as a nation.
If Kash Patel is not stopped, the damage he will do to the FBI — and our democracy — will be incalculable.
The good news is that we’ve already seen Republican senators stand up to Trump. There was enough opposition to Trump’s nomination of Matt Gaetz as attorney general to force Gaetz to withdraw just days after he was announced. Confirmation of Trump’s choice for defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, may also be in serious danger.
