Florida voters sue DeSantis for failing to call special elections

  • The ACLU of Florida filed a lawsuit on behalf of a couple of voters against Gov. Ron Desantis (R) for failing to call special elections for two vacant seats in the state legislature. The lawsuit argued DeSantis violated the Florida Constitution and state law.


  • State Rep. Joel Rudman (R) and Sen. Randy Fine (R) resigned from the legislature over six weeks ago, and Florida governors have historically taken action within a week of resignations to “ensure timely representation for constituents,” the ACLU said.


Republicans reintroduce SAVE Act in House and Senate

  • Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) reintroduced the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act — a nationwide proof of citizenship bill — in the House and Senate respectively. Roy and Lee introduced the bill in each chamber last year as well.


  • This follows the passage of a House rules package last week outlining the SAVE Act, which could disenfranchise numerous eligible voters, as one of its top legislative priorities in this new session of Congress.


Fani Willis appeals removal from Trump’s Georgia election subversion case

  • Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis asked the Georgia Supreme Court to review her disqualification from President-elect Donald Trump’s election subversion case in the state. Willis argued the Georgia Court of Appeals “overreached” its authority by removing her from the case.
