John, today we’re observing a national day of mourning after President Jimmy Carter’s funeral service.
President Carter was a champion of peace, human rights, and dignity for all people, everywhere. Our country — and the world — were better because of him.

He fought to expand Medicaid and Medicare. He never stopped campaigning for peace, both as president and as a private citizen. He built thousands of homes for families in need. And he was a model on anti-corruption efforts, going as far as putting his family farm in a blind trust when he entered the White House to avoid even the appearance of wrongdoing.
In today’s era of overwhelming corruption, crushing medical debt, skyrocketing housing costs, and heightened global conflicts, President Carter leaves a legacy that reminds us things can be different.
On this national day of mourning, I hope you’ll take some time to reflect on President Carter’s memory — and on where he would want us to go in the years ahead.
