Surveying damage to smaller classroom buildings on the eastern side of Palisades High. The vast majority of the campus and nearly all permanent structures remain intact.

Dear friends and partners,

It has been an unimaginable past few days for so many families and communities in Los Angeles. As multiple fires continue to rage across the city, here are the latest updates from LAUSD:
* All LAUSD schools are closed today and will remain closed tomorrow, Friday, January 10.
* Students have access to digital academic resources, mental health support, and local meal distribution efforts while schools remain closed.
* At this time, we expect all schools that are not located in evacuation zones to reopen on Monday, January 13.
* Palisades High has sustained significant damage, although less severe than we originally feared.
* We are devastated to report that large swaths of both Marquez and Palisades Elementary have been irreparably burned.
* As of now, nearby Canyon Elementary, Kenter Canyon Elementary, Paul Revere Middle, and Topanga Elementary have not sustained any damage.

I am immensely thankful for the families and school staff that were able to quickly evacuate students and get them out of harm’s way on Tuesday, and for the first responders who have been working tirelessly to battle these flames amidst seemingly impossible conditions.

I am also grateful to the many who have reached out offering their help—whether that is to house displaced families or offer temporary school locations or lend expertise as we work on contingency plans for the affected school communities in coming weeks and months. We are currently working on next week’s plans for students and families in the Palisades and will share updates with those affected as soon as they are ready.

We will continue to monitor the evolving situation and stay in contact with fire officials to do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety and education of our students during this time of heartbreak and uncertainty. We will get through this together.

Onward,
