John,
Even before Donald Trump is sworn into office, we’re preparing for the fight ahead.
We know that whether it’s attacks on immigrants or cuts to critical programs and services from Medicaid to housing to nutrition to Social Security, Congress and the incoming administration are preparing an agenda that hurts the most vulnerable among us while handing massive tax breaks to the rich and corporations.
That’s why, this week, we held our first webinar of 2025, titled Our Path Forward: Practical ways to protect people from harm despite threats from the new Administration and Congress. Nearly 3,000 activists from around the country registered for the webinar, ready and willing to work together.
We heard from national experts on strategies to fight back against proposals that will take health care, food assistance, and other basic services away from people. And, we discussed the need to stand together to protect vulnerable communities―children, immigrants, seniors, people with disabilities, and folks struggling with high food and health costs―as we push for the society we need and deserve.

John,
In what is proving to be the opening salvo in the upcoming fight over immigration, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed a bill yesterday that would require detention without possibility of bail for all undocumented immigrants charged with crimes, including minor and nonviolent offenses. In response, Rep. Pramilya Jayapal said in a statement: “Unfortunately, there are countless real-life examples of people getting wrongfully arrested for crimes they didn’t commit. People deserve to have their day in court and are innocent until proven guilty.”1
In less than two weeks, Donald Trump will be sworn in as president again and extremists in Congress are already working to implement his radical immigration policy that will be a direct attack on immigrant communities. Trump has tapped the former director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Tom Homan, to be his “border czar” and carry out the administration's deportation policies. In an interview with 60 Minutes, Homan said: “Wait until 2025, no one's off the table. If you're here illegally, you better be looking over your shoulder."2
The Coalition on Human Needs and our partners have started the year with strategy sessions and webinars to collaborate deeply on effective strategies we can use to blunt attacks while pushing forward on policies to improve the lives of marginalized communities during this session.
Just yesterday, we held our first webinar of the year, titled Our Path Forward: Practical ways to protect people from harm despite threats from the new Administration and Congress.
Nearly 3,000 activists registered for the webinar, ready and willing to work together. We heard from national experts on immigration, child welfare, women’s rights, tax justice, and more, sharing strategies that we must implement together to defend our rights and meet our needs.
We cannot be complacent. Will you donate $5 today to engage everyday people across the country in our shared struggle to protect our communities from the attacks that have already begun?

The extremists’ budget bill Donald Trump wants Congress to pass by this spring will be an unprecedented attack on immigration, the environment, health care, and our economy.
During his first term, Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant policies tore children from their parents, blocked millions of people from entering the United States through existing immigration and asylum channels, and threatened to deport millions of DACA recipients.3
Our fight for human needs has already begun before the second Trump administration is even sworn in.
Instead of more tax cuts for the rich and corporations, Congress must expand the Child Tax Credit so that the full tax credit reaches those most in need. When Congress did this in 2021, it reduced child poverty by nearly 50%. At the time, it also expanded the Earned Income Tax Credit age limits so that low-income earners younger than 25 and older than 64 could receive relief.4
These are the kinds of policies CHN and our allies will push for under this new administration while we unceasingly fight against cuts to vital health care, nutrition, housing, and other human needs programs. We know it’s going to be a long, tough fight, and we can’t make it unless we have your continued support.
Donate $HPC today to fund our effective strategies, fighting for vulnerable families and communities during the incoming administration.
