Friend,

I’m writing with an urgent ask: An anti-immigrant bill, the “Laken Riley Act,” just passed the House and is headed to the Senate, where it poses a serious threat of becoming law. We need your help now to stop it.

This harmful bill would erode constitutional protections, create chaos in our federal courts, and give states the blanket ability to challenge immigration policy — impacting families, communities, and due process for everyone.

Here’s what’s at stake:

Mandatory detention without due process: This bill would require the government to detain — without the opportunity to request release on bond — any undocumented immigrant who is charged or arrested with a theft-related offense, even if they have not been convicted. In practice, this could mean that an undocumented mother who is charged with shoplifting diapers will be locked up in detention for the duration of her deportation proceedings, without ever having a bond hearing.

Chaos in federal courts and a standstill on immigration policy: The bill grants any state the blanket ability to sue the federal government over a breathtakingly wide array of immigration actions, even without a legitimate interest in a case. This would drown our federal courts in lawsuits and disincentive an administration of any party from trying to improve our immigration system by issuing new policies.

Laying the groundwork for Trump's mass deportation agenda: This bill would empower Trump to swiftly move forward with his broader anti-immigrant agenda. It would sow fear across our communities and encourage racial profiling, while lining the pockets of private prison executives.

The Laken Riley Act is NOT about public safety — it’s a green light for Trump’s mass deportation agenda.

We cannot afford to let this bill become law. The Senate has the power to stop it, but they need to hear from their constituents. Friend, we need your voice NOW to urge your senators to oppose this dangerous legislation and stand with immigrant communities.
