Hello ,

By now you may have seen the news that Meta has decided to shift away from partnerships with fact-checking organizations like PolitiFact, Poynter’s fact-checking newsroom. Instead, Facebook will adopt a community notes program similar to X’s approach.

We hope that program succeeds.

Yet we believe there’s still immense value in independent, transparent fact-checking that gives people the information they need to govern themselves in a democracy.

Since 2016, our partnership with Facebook has focused on enriching the information ecosystem by providing more speech, more voices and more context to social media users. Facebook’s approach at the time was novel. Information from a set of independent journalists alongside social media posts helped paint a fuller picture of stories and news for Facebook users.

I do want to clarify: As fact-checkers, we never remove or censor content. Facebook’s own policies confirm this distinction between fact-checking and content moderation.

The good news is that Poynter’s commitment to fact-based journalism far predates our social media partnerships — and social media. Our commitment has not wavered in 50 years. We will continue this important work, and we invite you to be a part of it.

If you’d like to support our ongoing efforts to provide reliable, nonpartisan fact-checking, please consider making a contribution ([link removed]) .
I support Poynter’s commitment to fact-based journalism ([link removed])

Each gift helps ensure our journalists can continue this vital work of bringing truth, context and clarity to public discourse.

With gratitude,

Aaron Sharockman

Executive Director, PolitiFact

Vice President, Poynter
