While transgender students are the primary target of a bill seeking to impose a national sports ban, nonbinary and intersex students will also be impacted, as well as many cisgender students who do not conform to specific expectations of masculinity and femininity.
According to GLSEN's National School Climate Survey, one-quarter of LGBTQ+ students avoid athletic facilities and this number is more than doubled for transgender youth, with 51% saying they avoid physical education while in school. 14 states have already acted to ensure all students have a chance to participate; even though more than 127,000 transgender students live in those 14 states, there remain a small number of openly transgender student athletes.
Exclusionary policies like H.R. 28/S. 9 have no place in our schools and do nothing to address the actual safety concerns students face.
Fill out our Action Form now to send a message to Congress: Vote no on H.R. 28/S. 9 and continue to protect transgender, nonbinary, and intersex students.
