Hi John,

MPs are back in parliament this week after the Christmas break. With the disastrous COP29 behind us, now is the perfect time to hit the ground running and demand the government gets behind the Fossil Fuel Treaty for a fast and fair fossil fuel phase-out.

Thanks to campaigning by our local group, Global Justice York, Rachael Maskell MP has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) calling on the government to endorse the Fossil Fuel Treaty. An EDM is a type of parliamentary petition, and already MPs from major parties, and all four of the UK’s nations, have signed up.

We need MPs to show the government that there’s support for a globally just fossil fuel phase-out. Can you write to your MP and ask them to sign this petition in support of the Fossil Fuel Treaty?
I'll write
We know that the battle for a globally just energy transition is urgent. In the six months since this government took office, we have seen the injustice of the climate crisis, and the fossil fuel economy that’s causing it, laid bare time and time again.

In July, Hurricane Beryl ripped through the Caribbean and caused disruption and death across the region. On two Grenadian islands, more than 95% of homes were either damaged or destroyed. Scientists are clear that the strength and severity of this event was caused by warming sea levels.(1)

In September, Niger, Mali and Nigeria saw the worst flooding in 30 years. In Mali, 400,000 people were displaced by these floods, reminding us of the deep connection between climate justice and migrant justice.(2)

And in November, COP29 ended in disarray and injustice. Climate-vulnerable countries were all but forced to accept a pitiful climate finance offer from the global north. And shamefully there was no progress on the fossil fuel phase-out that we know is needed to stop the global south from becoming a sacrifice zone to big oil’s insatiable greed.

But there is hope, because in all of these cases countries, communities and activists fought back. Two climate-vulnerable countries – the Bahamas and Pakistan – endorsed the Fossil Fuel Treaty at the end of 2024. We need to stand with them and demand politicians in the UK support this plan for a globally just transition.

2025 must be a year of action, progress and change. This government is under pressure on many fronts, but we know there is some commitment to action on climate change. The door is ajar; and we need to push it wide open.

Noise and pressure from MPs will help to do exactly that. So please write to yours today and ask them to sign this vital parliamentary petition in support of the Fossil Fuel Treaty.
I'll write to my MP
Thank you,
