New research: Debt levels have trebled

It’s back to work for many of us this week, and we’ve kicked off our debt campaigning in 2025 with a huge expose in the Guardian ([link removed]) showing the true scale of the global debt crisis.

Our research shows that Lower-income country debt payments have trebled in the last decade, which is a shocking statistic.

Behind the numbers that means less kids in school, less funding for healthcare, and that countries most affected by the climate crisis have even less funding to deal with it.

Among the countries facing the highest repayments as a proportion of their income are Angola (65%), Laos (52%), Pakistan (43%) and Egypt (43%).

But we also know that this year is going to be a huge year for our campaign.

2025 is a Jubilee year for the church (traditionally a time to deliver debt cancellation), which means that thousands of people of all faiths and none will be getting behind calls to cancel the debt.

Jubilee years come around once every 25 years. And we’ll be making sure our demands for a new debt justice law and changes to the global economy, are so loud that they can’t be ignored.
