Something we’re all going to have to do over the next four years is get better at parsing the noise from the substance, and responding to what really matters. Case in point: Trump’s threatening posture towards Greenland, the Panama Canal, and Canada.
For now, this is all just bluster. But even if it never moves to action it has consequences.
Denmark, which Greenland is a part of, is one of the original member states of NATO — the greatest force for peace in generations. Trump and his buddies in Moscow want people to think that NATO is pushing the world to the brink of conflict. But NATO’s first and most important objective is peace, and it maintains that peace through an iron-clad alliance: If one member state is attacked, every member state comes to their assistance.
For 75 years, NATO has kept the peace.
But now, Trump is openly threatening a NATO ally with Military aggression. It’s a far cry from the isolationist posture Trump took during his campaign, and this aggressive stance against Panama, Denmark, and Canada is already causing some of our oldest and most loyal allies to look at America not as a partner, but as a potential adversary.
We don’t know yet if these threats will be followed by action. But if they are, or if it even looks like they will be, we need to be ready. Never forget that — even in the opposition — we have agency, strength, and capability. It’s going to take a hell of a lot of organizing to stand against this administration, but we are up to the challenge.
And as we prepare for Trump’s inauguration and everything that comes after, we’re asking for your commitment to help us enter his second term in fighting shape.
