Warning: Musk wants to buy our democracy

John, this is worrying:

Elon Musk, the power-hungry billionaire who owns Twitter/X, poses a grave threat to our democracy.

Alongside inviting racists back to the platform, retweeting Britain First conspiracies, and calling for Tommy Robinson to be released from prison, Musk’s influence in UK politics is growing. There was concern Musk might donate huge sums to Nigel Farage’s party, Reform UK. While they’ve since fallen out, the risk of Musk meddling in our politics hasn’t gone away.

You know as well as I do: huge sums of money can warp our democracy. We need to change the law to stop people like Musk from buying power – before it’s too late.

Musk’s takeover of Twitter has spelled disaster for the site, with rampant misinformation and far-right operators acting with impunity.

And why is this happening? Because amplifying extreme voices drives engagement on X — meaning more controversy, more clicks, and more profit for Musk.

We can’t let Elon Musk do to British politics what he’s done to X. His financial influence over our elections must be prevented, with tough rules against obscene foreign donations.
