Dear John,
When Ground Game Texas decided to launch our biggest cannabis decriminalization campaign yet in the city of Dallas, we knew we’d need an incredible local team to make it happen.
With a city as big as Dallas — it's the third largest city in the state and the ninth in the US — any successful campaign requires an investment of time and passion from a variety of people, organizations, and communities.
Fortunately, our Dallas campaign was led by Natalie Marquez and Triste Ordex, our Dallas Field Director and Campaign Manager, respectively. Both Natalie and Triste brought their lived experience to their organizing, allowing them to forge genuine connections with supporters throughout the city.
Natalie grew up in the Rio Grande Valley, where she first honed her organizing skills, including volunteering with Angry Tias and Abuelas to assist asylum-seeking families in safely navigating through Border Patrol. Triste is a mom, activist, and retired Marine Corps Staff Sergeant, who made her foray into electoral politics knocking and making calls for progressive candidates in the DFW area. Both Natalie and Triste knew well how urgently needed cannabis decriminalization was for people of color in Dallas, who are disproportionately harmed by possession arrests.
Natalie and Triste led a team that worked tirelessly to gather signatures to put decriminalization on the ballot and educate the public before the November vote. With their hard work, the measure not only passed, but did so with a resounding 67% of the vote.
Our victory in Dallas sent a message to our state government — Texans are ready for progressive change. While we continue to face opposition in Dallas with Ken Paxton’s recently filed lawsuit, we’re ready to continue the fight in the new year. A monthly recurring contribution of $10, or $25 will help us defend our victories, fight back against unjust attacks, and bring transformative change across Texas.
