John,I was a little anxious when my kids told us they’d gotten tattoos — Meg and I aren’t really tattoo people.
But when they rolled up their sleeves, this is what they showed us: Marek had gotten the numbers of our address, in the font that graces the front of our home. And Rosa had hand-drawn a picture of our stoop.
We almost cried (OK, fine, I did cry). Our Brooklyn row house has provided them with such a sense of security and identity, that they wanted it permanently engraved on their arms.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of New Yorkers don’t have that sense of security. Talk to any New Yorker, and they’ll tell you the #1 issue on everyone’s minds: Housing affordability. NYC has half the homeownership rate of the rest of the country, and that number is even lower for Black and brown New Yorkers.
We can change that, John. I’m running my campaign for Mayor of New York City with a common-sense, dramatically renewed focus on affordable housing.
As Mayor, I will prioritize building a LOT more housing at a wide range of income levels, protect tenants from harassment and displacement, dramatically reduce homelessness, and create new models that make homeownership possible for the next generation of New York’s families.
I’ve got a long track record as a housing champion — for example, just look at what we’ve accomplished in Gowanus. I’m proud to have initiated and built broad community support for the Gowanus planning and rezoning process that will produce 8,500 new housing units, almost 3,000 of which will be affordable to low-income and working-class families.
The Gowanus project is one of the only large-scale rezonings to have the overwhelming support of its local Community Board – and is generating more new development than anywhere else in the City.
And in the Comptroller’s office, we’re applying every tool to solve the housing crisis — from issuing the City’s first three social bonds to finance over 12,000 deeply affordable housing units, to investing alongside CPC and Related to help save the 35,000 rent-stabilized units put at risk by the collapse of Signature Bank.
As Mayor, I’ll continue do everything I can to address New Yorkers’ #1 concern of affordable housing. Can you make a contribution of any amount to my campaign right now to help send me to City Hall? [[link removed]]

John, whether you are inspired to tattoo the address of your childhood home on your arm or not — I believe all New Yorkers should have a stable, deeply affordable place to call home.
That’s the city I’m fighting for, and I hope you’re with me.
Thanks,
Brad
