The GOP can afford to lose only one or two votes. We can afford to lose none.

The Republican-controlled 119th Congress is now in session, and its priorities are as outrageous and upsetting as we feared ([link removed]) . The GOP wishlist includes even stricter voter registration requirements, more restrictions on reproductive care, withholding of funds for sanctuary states and cities, and more. Now’s the time to make sure our federal elected officials do everything they can to prevent the GOP wishlist from passing.
The silver lining is that Republicans have their slimmest majority ever in the House, which makes it that much easier for our representatives to stop these bills in their tracks. But we can’t afford any complicity—we need to make sure there are no Democratic defections in standing strong against the MAGA agenda.
Our Democratic electeds can provide a strong xxxxxx against this agenda. MAGA infighting can peel off votes on the Republican side, and we need to make sure Democrats never help them. Democratic defections have happened before, especially on progressive issues. For example, when he was in the House, our current Senator Adam Schiff voted YES on H.R. 9495, a bill that would have crushed dissent. With a groundswell of calls, we were able to flip his vote.
It is incredibly important that we keep doing this in the coming year. As our colleagues and friends in red states apply pressure to their Congresspeople to peel off their votes, we need to apply pressure on ours to keep their votes in lockstep.
Our current main concerns are:
1. HR 22 ([link removed]) , the SAVE Act, which requires eligible voters to present citizenship papers in order to vote for federal office, which would disenfranchise millions.
2. HR 28 ([link removed]) , which will force schools to exclude trans children from sports.
Call your Representative and tell them: ([link removed]) vote NO on HR 22, HR 28, and the GOP Priority List.
These calls are extra important because while the Republicans can only lose one or two votes, we can’t afford to lose any. So make sure our Representatives know we’re watching!

Protect your health from the four viruses on the rampage
------------------------------------------------------------
You might have noticed that an unusually high number of people you know are sick. Maybe you’re sick yourself—in which case, we hope you get better soon!
There are no fewer than four viruses spreading all over the country ([link removed]) right now:
* COVID-19, which is very much not over and still carries serious risks of death or disability
* Flu, which surges every year around this time and can cause severe harms even when a specific strain like bird flu isn’t causing additional problems
* RSV, another respiratory virus that also surges every winter and is particularly hazardous to infants and older people
* Norovirus, a gastrointestinal virus (“stomach bug”) that can cause severe vomiting and/or diarrhea
The best way to protect yourself and people you care about is to wear a mask ([link removed]) in shared indoor spaces such as your workplace, stores, etc. Masks work to stop transmission of respiratory viruses. For norovirus ([link removed]) , you should also regularly disinfect surfaces (especially food-contact surfaces) and wash your hands with soap and water—alcohol-based hand sanitizers work on some germs, but they don’t work on norovirus ([link removed]) .
If you get sick, stay home so you don’t infect others. Note that with norovirus especially, you can still be contagious for two weeks or even longer ([link removed]) after symptoms resolve.
Also, if you haven’t gotten your 2024 vaccines against COVID-19 and flu, or your RSV vaccine ([link removed]) if you’re eligible for that, you should do so ASAP. Keeping your vaccinations up to date—including the annual ones—helps prevent the worst outcomes if you do get sick.
