Hi there,
After much reflection, I’m reaching out to share a bittersweet decision: It’s time for me to step away from my role as President of The Humane League. I’d like to personally thank you for the privilege and joy it’s been to lead this community of passionate, kind, and visionary advocates.
I’ve loved animals all my life, and (as you may already know!) I began my career as a veterinarian. But it was a single day—a visit to a slaughterhouse—that propelled me into the farmed animal advocacy that has become my life’s work.
When I accepted this role, I’d been leading THL in the United Kingdom for five years. As I packed my bags to move halfway across the world to sunny San Diego, I was nervous. I shouldn’t have been. These last three years have been some of the most transformative I’ve experienced in my long career fighting for animals.
Looking back, I’m in awe—and deeply proud—of the impact we’ve made together. From protests in the streets to cases in the Supreme Court, you brought the plight of farmed animals from darkness into the spotlight. Advocates from all walks of life joined forces across states, countries, and continents to fight for a kinder world. Millions more hens can feel the relief of stretching their wings and walking on solid ground.
At its core, the work we do is about forging a more compassionate future for all. I’ve come to realize that compassion truly begins with each of us and the compassion we extend to ourselves. As we often say, this work is a marathon, not a sprint—and after relentlessly pushing our movement forward for the last 15 years, I know that to keep making a meaningful difference for animals, I need to take some time for rest.
I’m delighted to pass the torch to Mark Middleton, a long-time board member and dedicated advocate, who will be stepping in as Interim President and spearheading the search for a new leader alongside our Board. Shawn Brown, our wonderful Sr. Associate VP of Organizing, will step in as our Interim Executive Vice President. Both care very deeply for this work, and I am confident that this community is in the best of hands—as are the animals who are counting on us.
Throughout this leadership change, our teams will remain laser-focused on our goals, most especially our commitment to hold hundreds of companies accountable to their 2025 deadlines for ending cruel cages. This year will be a critical one for farmed animals. Your support is essential and I hope we can count on you to stick with us as we tip the scales towards a cage-free world.
In my heart, I believe ending the systemic abuse of farmed animals is the most important fight of our time. And I have no doubt that The Humane League will be successful in our mission to eliminate battery cages from the planet and dismantle factory farming, piece by piece. This movement is proof that kindness really can change the world.
Thank you for everything. I’m confident that the future is bright for animals because of kind people like you.
For the animals, always.
Vicky Bond
President
