Together, as always, we rise.

John,
The last six years serving as Mayor has truly been a dream. As someone who grew up in poverty and surrounded by violence, I never thought I would go to college, let alone have the opportunity to serve this City. Even now, as I leave office, it doesn’t quite seem real that it happened.
The truth is, when you’re in the middle of the daily chaos and struggle of running a city as complex and passionate as San Francisco, there’s little time for peace and reflection. When one problem is put to bed, three more rise in its place. The work never stops.
Over the last two months, for the first time, I’ve had more space to reflect on the work we’ve done and the challenges we’ve faced. And I am filled with pride for what we’ve accomplished together. Through some of the toughest times this city has faced, in crisis after crisis, through the death of a mayor, a global pandemic, economic fallout, social upheaval, and the rise of fentanyl, this City has stood strong. We’ve weathered so much, and now we are here, a city on the upswing towards a brighter future.
We’ve brought crime rates down to levels we haven’t seen in over twenty years, expanded access to treatment, and helped tens of thousands of people out of homelessness. We’ve opened beautiful new parks throughout our city, built new neighborhoods all along our waterfront, and created a new idea of what public space can mean in a neighborhood. We’ve broken down barriers and cut red tape to build the housing we so badly need. We’ve eliminated fees and cut permitting times for small businesses that bring life to our merchant corridors. We’ve made landmark investments in families and communities that for too long were ignored. Muni is more reliable and more popular than it has been in two decades and we are creating a more innovative, sustainable transit future. We are turning Downtown into a 24/7 neighborhood, making San Francisco a destination again, and bringing joy to our neighborhoods.
We are a major city and there will always be challenges. But I think of where we’ve come from since the day we had to do the unthinkable and shut down our city. What came after that historic day was a journey – first of surviving and then of healing from a once-in-a-century pandemic. Healing isn’t easy, but it does create strong bonds. And we’ve been forged by those bonds into a stronger, more resilient San Francisco. I will be forever grateful to the people in the community, the city workforce, and everyone who gets up every day to take care of and fight for this city. Thank you for working with us to make a real difference, even in our most difficult days. Thank you for believing in San Francisco.
Today, as I leave office, I am filled with hope for the future. San Francisco will always be the phoenix that rises. It’s on our flag and it’s in our hearts. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do my part in leading the flight of this phoenix. It has been the honor of my life to serve as your Mayor. And know this – I will never stop giving to this City that raised me, this city that I love.
Together, as always, we rise.
