Warm wishes for Peace, Justice, and Climate Action in 2025!
We are starting the year energized by the passage of the Climate Superfund Act 🥳🔥💪🏽 at the end of 2024 – a landmark success for the climate movement!! After a rigorous year-long campaign that ended in a three-day sit-in outside Hochul’s office and 18 arrested on misdemeanor charges, Hochul signed the bill! It received a lot of coverage, including the NY Times, Democracy Now, and Fox News! The law means that NY state, the 10th largest economy in the world, will hold Big Oil accountable for their past 20 years of emissions, and ensure they pay $75 billion over 25 years to address climate damages, strengthen infrastructure and resilience projects for frontline communities. Similar legislation has been introduced in Massachusetts and New Jersey, and more states across the country plan to do the same. Just a few days after the law was passed in NY, the fossil fuel lobby filed a suit against Vermont which passed the first Climate Superfund Act, demonstrating the seriousness of this indictment of Big Oil.
