This week I am back in Washington, D.C. for a week of legislative activity and yesterday's certification of the 2024 election. I am optimistic about the Trump Administration and the House and Senate Republican majorities to get our country back on track.

I do not serve in Congress to be a caretaker in the slow demise of America— I serve to fight and work to make it stronger. That’s what I am doing while believe in our brightest days are yet to come.

The Year Ahead

As the 119th Congress begins, thank you again for giving me the honor of serving the Big First District in the United States House of Representatives. When you sent me to Congress, I promised to fight for agriculture and our conservative Kansas values.

Last week, I was sworn in for the 119th Session of Congress. On November 5, 2024, America gave Washington, D.C. a mandate, sending Republican majorities to the U.S. House and Senate, and endorsing the greatest political comeback in U.S. history with the election of President Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States. 

I heard that mandate loud and clear, and I look forward to working with the incoming Republican majorities and President Trump to unleash American energy independence, secure our southern border, rein in federal spending, make the 2017 tax cuts permanent, and pass a fiscally conservative Farm Bill.

This week, the House will consider H.R. 29, the Laken Riley Act. This legislation makes it clear that any illegal immigrant who commits a crime will be a priority for arrest and must be detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement until they can be deported. It also holds future administrations accountable if they choose to embrace far-left, open-border policies over enforcing the law. Laken Riley's tragic death was senseless and preventable. This is a simple step we can take to protect all Americans.

Reforming Leadership at Haskell Indian Nations University

Haskell Indian Nations University is a one-of-a-kind, historic institution that was established to meet the educational needs of students that belong to federally recognized tribes. Haskell should be a crown jewel for Native Americans and Kansas, but for far too long the federal government has failed the university and its students. Senator Jerry Moran and I are seeking feedback to protect Haskell’s rich heritage and culture by removing its governance from the U.S. Department of Interior and the Bureau of Indian Education and establishing a Board of Regents nominated by Tribal communities. 

This new chapter for Haskell is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it’s imperative that Haskell stakeholders have an active voice in helping us enact this change. We are seeking feedback from the Native American, Lawrence, and higher education communities on our proposed legislation to ensure the bill effectively addresses key issues at Haskell. Those who are interested in submitting feedback should email [email protected] for a feedback response form. Forms should be submitted no later than February 1, 2025. 

Rejecting Politics in Dietary Guidance

Dietary guidelines should be determined by scientific evidence, not political agendas. Last month, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee published their updated dietary guidelines. I was disappointed that the Committee chose to ignore the wealth of scientific evidence that affirms the nutritional benefits of animal protein like beef in combatting chronic disease and flavored milk as an option.

As the representative for the top beef producing congressional district in the country, I encourage us all to submit comments to the Federal Register which closes on February 10, 2025.

Fighting for Strong Agricultural Trade

Late last month, President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that Mexico will rescind its import ban on genetically modified corn. Trade disputes like the previous ban by Mexico greatly harm Kansas corn producers and Mexican consumers.

In October, I pressured the Biden-Harris Administration to engage with the newly elected President Sheinbaum over this ban and to begin preparing for the 2026 review of the USMCA. I am grateful to see that our pressure forced the Administration to engage in negotiations to remove these senseless handcuffs and ensure our corn producers have access to an open market.
