Four years ago today, a violent mob of insurrectionists attacked the U.S. Capitol after being goaded by Donald Trump and congressional Republicans.
Their goal was to discount our votes and overturn the 2020 election results.
For a brief moment, the nation paused — stunned by what had just transpired.
But shortly after, the GOP began a years-long effort to whitewash history and excuse the inexcusable.
With Donald Trump set to return to the White House in less than three weeks, he has promised to pardon the insurrectionists who so violently desecrated the seat of our nation’s democracy.
Republicans would rather have us all forget about what they incited that day. We’ll never forget what happened that day, John. And we won't ever forget those who escaped accountability.
This is what we’re up against.
There can be no compromise with those who stormed or incited the storming of our Capitol. This isn’t a left-right debate, it’s a debate between those who seek to uphold our democracy and those who seek to destroy it.
Today, as we reflect on the events of four years ago, we’re reaffirming our commitment to always remember — and remain vigilant of the threats to come.
