Congratulations to Bill for identifying the Ash-throated Flycatcher (Myiarchus cinerascens). This West-coast species is not usually seen in Virginia, but was photographed by Judy Gallagher at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge on December 18, 2024. Like many other desert animals such as the kangaroo rat, Ash-throated Flycatchers don’t need to drink water. Instead they get it all from the food they eat.
