This week, the Trump administration announced a cruel plan that would end the deployment of our National Guard currently on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis — just one day before they’d become eligible for federal retirement and education benefits.
It’s a heartless new plan, but it’s exactly what we’ve come to expect from a Commander-in-chief who has disrespected his station every day he’s occupied it.
Immediately after the announcement, we came together as a community to do what we do best. This grassroots team immediately launched a petition and garnered over 25,000 signatures condemning the new policy overnight.
Then Senator Gary Peters wrote a letter to the administration condemning the policy. Senator Tammy Baldwin introduced the National Guard COVID-19 Response Stability Act which would ensure all troops activated during the coronavirus response would receive their full benefits. And Represenative Max Rose, who is currently deployed as part of New York's coronvirus relief effort, slammed the act publicly.
We acted fast because one thing has always been true: When you come for one of our own, you come for all of us.
Now, we need to keep the drumbeat going on this issue until the Trump administration agrees to extend full benefits for any troops activated during this health crisis. Thousands of servicemembers fighting to keep their communities safe are depending on us to pressure the president to do the right thing.
Donald Trump won’t get away with trying to nickel and dime our troops — not on our watch. Thanks for taking action on this today.
