john -- Tennessee is one of just seven states that hasn't made it safer for citizens to cast ballots in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In fact, election officials have repeatedly maintained that fear of contracting COVID-19 is "not a valid excuse" to vote by mail even though more than 300 Tennesseans and 95,000 Americans of all ages have already died.

Even with a surge of ballots cast in 2018, Tennessee has consistently ranked near the bottom nationwide in voter turnout. Without action, we could see even less voter participation this November.

No one should choose between staying healthy and safe or making their voices heard in our democracy. There's too much at stake this November to risk even a single person sitting out this election because they're afraid of contracting COVID-19 or being exposed and bringing it home to a loved one.

Every Tennessean who wants to vote in the safety of their home should be able to request a mail ballot. And for people who want to vote in person, we ought to extend early voting and expand curbside voting so no one has to stand in a long line.

I've fought to defend the Constitution on the battlefield and in the courtroom, and Americans should never be forced to make an impossible choice between staying healthy and exercising our right to vote.
