In October, a concerned voter asked Donald Trump if he regretted his role in the January 6th insurrection that tried to overthrow our democracy.
Instead of taking accountability or expressing just an iota of remorse or reflection, Trump called the deadly day of January 6th, 2021 “a day of love.”
I gotta say, folks, it takes a lot to shock me after nine long years of Trump. But that was low, even for him.
Somehow, that wasn’t even the worst part of his response. No, that was when he referred to the mob of violent criminals who invaded our Capitol as “WE.”
We.
We , the armed neo-Nazis, Q-Anon cult members, white supremacists, and MAGA extremists.
And, by that logic, the thousands of staffers, interns, support workers, Capitol police, members of Congress, and his own Vice President, are “THEY;” the enemy.
If you believe what makes America great is our multilateral, diverse, thriving democracy, YOU are Donald Trump’s enemy, too.
I’ve never been afraid to level with you – good, bad, and ugly. And this moment we’re in, with our democracy on a knife’s edge, is really, really ugly. I won’t pretend otherwise.
But we must also remember that, despite the dogged efforts of the most powerful individual on Earth, decency and humanity prevailed on that cold, gray January afternoon.
For those who lost their lives that tragic day, and for all of those who have sacrificed everything for our freedoms, we cannot let hate and fear win out. We cannot fall into despair.
We owe it to them to keep fighting.
With you,
