Today, President Biden announced that he is permanently banning new offshore drilling in most U.S. coastal waters. This decision will permanently withdraw more than 625 million acres of the outer continental shelf from future oil and gas drilling — and, crucially, Trump can’t undo it without an act of Congress.

All I can say: it’s about damn time. This decision is a massive victory for our generation and for communities on the frontlines of oil and gas extraction.

But, Biden needs to go further to protect our communities, our oceans, and climate: before Trump takes office, Biden must reject pending Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) export projects.

Earlier this year, the Biden Administration paused new LNG export approvals. In December, the Department of Energy released a report cautioning against new approvals. Now, it’s time for Biden to finish the job by rejecting the pending LNG export projects. Let’s be clear — this would not be happening if not for movements. In 2020, Joe Biden didn’t run as a climate candidate. But millions of people across the country organized like hell for years -- including Sunrise. Young people walked hundreds of miles, others went on hunger strike outside the White House, and millions of people contacted the White House.
