Regions of New York are starting to open up, but the pain and suffering caused by the pandemic to our communities is going to take much longer to heal. Families and students are hurting, many of them Black, Brown and low-income communities that have borne the brunt of the virus's impact. Decades of systemic racism created the very inequities in education, healthcare, housing and income that made these same communities so vulnerable to the pandemic in the first place.

New York's State Legislators have a moral duty to the people they represent to make addressing these inequities the number one priority when they return to work on Wednesday.
