Hi John.
I hope you’re well and staying warm. We’ve certainly gotten a lot of snow recently. So today, I wanted to make sure to share some important public safety resources.
Road conditions
Many roadways remain unsafe. Please refrain from driving whenever possible. This will also give local authorities time to clear and treat roads.
• You can also call 511 on your phone for road condition updates.
• Call *47 to report any crucial issues immediately to the Kansas Highway Patrol or if you require help on the road.
Public safety
There are common sense steps everyone can take to stay safe during this time.
• Winter Ready: Did you know that home heating is the second leading cause of home fires? 63 percent of temperature deaths are also related to cold exposure. Learn more about how to keep your family safe at ready.gov, a public service by the Department of Homeland Security.
• Warming centers: Free warming centers may be available for those who are in need. Please call ahead of time for more information and stay safe while traveling.
o Johnson County: Scroll down to warming centers in their winter weather guide. Various locations throughout the region may be available.
o Wyandotte County: The County reports that a cold weather shelter with a capacity of 40 people will be open tonight at 645 Nebraska Avenue, Kansas City KS 66101. Please call (913) 725-0079 for more information. You can learn more on their website (scroll down to KCK Cold Weather Shelter).
• Public safety resources for Kansans: Find various additional public safety resources on my website, including local law enforcement contacts. Please be advised that many local authorities are busy during this time and may only have the resources to quickly respond to the most urgent emergencies.
Help with heating and utilities
It’s more important than ever to stay warm now. Here’s how you may be able to get help with your utilities if you need assistance.
• Cold Weather Rule: This is a consumer protection standard by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) that helps ensure all Kansans can access electric, gas, and water services during the cold winter months. You can also call the KCC to ask questions at (800) 662-0027.
• Utility and financial resources: You can visit my website to learn more about additional help. For example, some families and seniors may qualify for help lowering costs on staying warm, utilities, and energy repairs.
More on local government operations
The weather has impacted operations throughout the Kansas Third District.
• Kansas: Learn more about the state’s response here.
• Anderson: The Anderson County Courthouse is closed due to weather conditions.
• Franklin: Learn more about services and contact information for Franklin County.
• Johnson: A variety of operations are impacted, including the closure of government buildings and home delivered meals. The County has a Winter Weather guide with resources and information, including more information on local roads.
• Miami: Non-emergency offices are closed due to the weather.
• Wyandotte: County offices are closed but emergency services are available.
My job is to serve every person and corner of our community – regardless of party. Whether we agree on every issue or not is beside the point. Everyone deserves a government that works for them – not just for special interests, big corporations, or the extremes of either party.
It’s an honor to serve you and your family. Please stay safe and if you have any questions, please let me know.
My warmest regards,
Sharice L. Davids Member of Congress
