Thousands of people descended upon the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021 with the goal to cause chaos, mayhem, destruction, and to overturn the results of a free and fair election.
Americans have fought and died over the centuries to protect our republic and to expand our rights, liberties, and democratic principles with each generation. January 6th was a desecration of those ideals.
Democracies can take decades to build, but they can fall in a day. We came close to losing ours when a mob, egged on by extremist elected officials, bludgeoned Capitol police officers, broke windows, burst through locked doors and gates, and took control of the Senate floor.
It was a day none of us imagined happening, but it's a day that is bound to repeat itself unless we stand up to stop it at every turn.
The Republican Party breathlessly repeating the "big lie" in every talking point that came out of their mouths facilitated the insurrection on January 6th. And Republicans have proven time and again that they are more interested in power than standing up to Trump or their fellow members.
I founded One Country Project because I believe we are more united than divided.
It is our responsibility as Americans to stand up for democracy, and in that spirit, defending our country from attacks on our democracy, voting rights, free speech, and a free press will be one of our highest priorities in 2025.
