It was never a "day of love," as the President-elect still claims.

It was an ugly and violent; a shameful stain on our history where people died. We can never forget that. And we can't let partisans gaslight the American people about what really went on that day.

What a difference four years makes. Today, virtually no one challenges the legitimacy of the recent presidential election. Gone are the chants of "stop the steal" - mostly yelled by those whose anger with the outcome of the election was a substitute for actual evidence.

Today, the strong consensus is that last November's election was fair, accurate, honest, and secure.

In Minnesota, we led the way - with sky-high turnout and a smooth election carried out by tens of thousands of friends and neighbors who did their jobs with integrity.

On this day, let's resolve to protect our democracy. That means never failing to remind people how close we came four years ago to a true constitutional crisis. But it also means looking to the future; protecting the laws and procedures that work while doing even more to show the public how well our system works. We should keep moving forward by:

* Safeguarding the freedom to vote for every eligible voter.
* Pushing back against dangerous disinformation about elections.
* Protecting our election workers from threats and harassment.

Today is a grim anniversary - but also an opportunity. Even when democracy has seemed dinged and dented in recent years, it has never come close to being defeated.

My pledge is to use the remembrance of January 6th as a strength and a power to push forward; to make elections accessible and secure for every eligible voter.
