TELL RYAN WALTERS TO STOP INDOCTRINATING STUDENTS!!

Last month the State Department of Education unveiled their proposed changes for social studies curriculum [[link removed]] . Unsurprisingly, they are chock full of ahistorical political pandering that elevates rightwing talking points over the best educational practices.

Don’t believe us, just ask Ryan Walters what he himself thought of the existing standards when he helped draft them working as a teacher instead of as a political hack, “[the existing standards] foster an environment that creates a love of history due to the engaging nature in which it will now be presented.”

Even conservative education advocacy organizations rank our current standards as in the Top 10 across the country. [[link removed]] But it seems Walters won’t rest until he’s made another headline and dragged the schools of our state down with him. These new standards will be considered at an upcoming State Board of Education meeting, but not before WE, the public, get to review them.

You can submit a Public Comment to the Board of Education using the linked google form. [[link removed]] This form is maintained and circulated by OSDE, and the comments will likely be reviewed by multiple staff members at the Department. We are asking you to join us in submitting thoughtful, constructive, and professional comments that will better our schools.

And an important reminder, tomorrow, January 7th, we’ll be hosting Democrats at the State Capitol for Organizational [[link removed]] Day! We know that the upcoming session will be full to the brim of extremist rightwing legislation. By showing up at the Capitol we show that there are Democrats around the state demanding real solutions instead of partisan pandering.

This chance to meet with Legislators and learn the lay of the Capitol will be key to successful advocacy for the Legislative Session, and we will help you find the members and offices most important to your interests.
