THIS MONTH IN LEFTIST HISTORY

January 1936:

Auto Workers’ Strike: Workers at the General Motors plant in Flint, Michigan, began a sit-down strike, a pivotal moment in labor history. This event led to the recognition of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union.

January 11, 1912

Bread and Roses Strike: The Lawrence Textile Strike in Massachusetts began when mill owners reduced worker hours and wages. This strike, led by immigrant workers, highlighted the demand for fair wages and working conditions.

January 17, 1915

Industrial Workers of the World (IWW): Members of the IWW held large protests and strikes in several cities to oppose labor exploitation, often clashing with local authorities.

January 25, 1890

United Mine Workers (UMW) Founded: The UMW was officially formed in Columbus, Ohio, to fight for miners’ rights, including better wages and working conditions.
