Yesterday, President Biden signed into law the Social Security Fairness Act. This is a huge deal for millions of people who dedicated their lives to serving their communities — retired teachers, firefighters, postal workers, municipal workers, police officers and more.
This was one of the final acts of the last Congress, and I’m grateful we could deliver this win for so many families. I have been a champion for this law since my early days in Congress.
Prior to this law, millions of public servants were getting unfairly shortchanged on Social Security benefits because of outdated rules from 40 years ago. People saw their benefits reduced — despite paying into the system — just because they split their career between private sector jobs and public sector jobs with pensions. I’d heard from thousands impacted by this, and this action will put more money directly into their pockets.
This would not have been possible without the organizing efforts of the Labor movement. There were plenty of times over the years of organizing that they could’ve given up, but they never wavered in their support.
I want to express my particular gratitude to Senator Sherrod Brown, who made this fight one of the cornerstones of his career. He was early to this issue when it was a lonely fight, and after a decade of leading on this, it will be a fitting legacy as his time in the Senate sadly ends. I will miss him greatly. There were few greater champions for working people in the Democratic Party.
It’s never been clearer that we need more leaders like Sherrod Brown in the Democratic Party, and I will do everything I can to help carry the mantle he left behind to fight for the dignity of work and deliver for the working people of this country.
Every best wish,
Chris Murphy
