The first three weeks of May have been eventful for all of us, as parts of our
economy in Alabama have reopened and as more economic relief bills have been
brought before Congress. I am glad that our state is holding strong and
loosening restrictions so that we can go to church, get a haircut, and even sit
down for a meal at certain restaurants. This is solid progress, and I am
hopeful that we will see more of it as we move further into May.
Last Week in Washington
I traveled back to Washington to vote on two pieces of legislation last
Friday. The first was on a measure to allow proxy voting in the House of
Representatives, and the second was on a multi-trillion dollar package known as
the Heroes Act. I strongly opposed both bills, and I believe they both go
against what Congress is meant to do ? represent the American people.
The fact that Democrats proposed, and passed, a measure to allow proxy voting
showcases their distorted perception of reality. When hardworking Americans are
beginning to go back to work, Nancy Pelosi wants Congress to stay home and vote
from our couches.This is outrageous
<[link removed]>, and it is a
blatant slap in the face to the people who elected us to be in Washington, D.C.
to represent their interests. Our job as representatives is to show up and work
for our constituents, and our job has never been to text in our votes on
important legislation.
As I mentioned earlier, there was also a vote last week on the Heroes Act,
which is a multi-trillion dollar stimulus package that was dreamed up by Nancy
Pelosi behind closed doors. Let me be clear, the process to create this
legislation was an absolute joke. Democratic leadership decided that they would
put together the largest spending bill in United States history without any
input from Republicans ? and that is absurd. It?s times like this, when our
country is facing a crisis, that we must come together and work across the
aisle. Sadly, that is not what the Democrats have in mind, and Itook to the
floor of the House of Representatives

to publicly oppose the Heroes Act and the way it was created.?

Although there is not a great deal of good news coming from Washington, there
is good news in Alabama. As you all know and have experienced, our state is one
of the most open in the entire country. Some studies have us ranked as the 4th
most open state out of all 50 in the union. This is fantastic, especially since
the number of cases has not spiked since enacting these measures.
Last weekend I asked a question on my Facebook page

for reopening has been going. The results were overwhelming, as 73% of the
responses were supportive of the strategy. I think this reflects what most of
us are feeling, and that is an urge to get back to work and get back to normal.

Happy Memorial Day
I realize that Memorial Day is the unofficial kickoff to summer.? However, I
hope you will take time to remember what the holiday is truly about.? Veterans
Day in November is about honoring all veterans, but Memorial Day is
specifically for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and died for our country.
