Issue Number:  Tax Tip 2025-01:

*IRS-certified volunteers can help their community during tax season*

Every filing season, IRS-certified volunteers [ [link removed] ] help qualified individuals file federal tax returns. Anyone who wants to make a difference in their community can help by volunteering with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or Tax Counseling for the Elderly Programs.

*Volunteering is easy and convenient*

The IRS encourages anyone to volunteer. No prior experience is needed, and free training is provided for each role. Other benefits may include:

* Flexible hours*: *The time commitment is up to the volunteer.
* Virtual options to volunteer from anywhere.
* Free tax law training and materials.
* Continuing education credits for tax professionals.

*Available positions*

Volunteers can also choose a role that doesn't require tax law certification, such as:

* Interpreter.
* Greeter.
* Quality reviewer.
* Marketing specialist.
* Instructor.
* Computer specialist.

*Two types of IRS volunteer programs*

Free basic tax return preparation for qualified individuals is available with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly [ [link removed] ] programs. IRS partners and volunteers operate VITA and TCE sites.  Qualified taxpayers can use one of these programs if they meet these requirements:

* *VITA*: People who generally earn $67,000 per year or less, people with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers.
* *TCE: *People aged 60 or older. TCE specializes in tax issues unique to seniors.

Volunteering can make a difference in your community and offer personal growth. To find out more about volunteering, visit People Helping People [ [link removed] ] on IRS.gov.
