"They Can't Deny It: The Power Is In The Street!"

Over the past several weeks, the world has watched as Puerto Ricans have taken to the streets in incredible numbers to denounce the actions of Puerto Rico's government leadership. Puerto Rico has a strong and admirable culture of engagement; its residents are proud and compassionate, regularly participating in the political process-which has been on full display over the past month.

Now that Gov. Ricardo Rossell? has resigned and Justice Secretary Wanda V?zquez has been sworn in as his successor, let's not lose sight of the people's demand to have a greater say over their own leaders or of the powerlessness inherent in Puerto Rico's relationship with the federal government. It has never been clearer that the colonial relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico has been the root cause of the injustice that the island residents have suffered. It is time for progressives to firmly declare support for a fair and equitable process of self-determination to give the people of Puerto Rico agency to decide their future.
