On Friday, Republicans subjected America to more of their internal drama as they narrowly voted to retain Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House.

Johnson's grasp over the Speakership is especially perilous given the growing faction of ultra-rightwing “rebels” within the Republican Caucus who played the decisive role in the ouster of his predecessor.

Making Johnson’s position even worse is the defection of Congresswoman Victoria Spartz (R-IN), who announced last month that she would be leaving the House Republican Conference. When combined with all of the vacancies that opened up after Trump appointed sitting members of Congress to his Cabinet, it leaves the GOP with a single vote majority.
