John — it’s official.

Yesterday, with loved ones by my side, I was sworn in as a member of the 119th Congress from Washington’s 6th District.

I have a lot to say, but I’ll do my best to keep this short:

It’s the honor of my life to serve my neighbors and follow in the footsteps of hard-working public servants like Derek Kilmer and Norm Dicks – and like my hospital housekeeper grandma Della Trujillo Randall, like the teachers and civil servants and community leaders who are an example to all of us.

Along with my colleagues in Congress, I’ll be tackling many of our country’s most immense challenges: bringing down household costs, strengthening workers’ rights, addressing the climate crisis, protecting our healthcare and safety net from cuts, and so much more.

I recognize the responsibility and privilege of being the first — but definitely not the last! — queer Latina in Congress. As a working-class woman who was the first in my family to graduate from college, my hope is that my presence here sends the unmistakable message that ALL of us are welcome, ALL of us deserve respect, and ALL of us have a role to play in building a brighter future.

Thank you, again, for everything you did to make this possible. I cannot thank you enough — and I feel ready for the challenges ahead because I know we’ll face them together.

In service,

Congresswoman Emily Randall
