Let’s be clear, folks: Congress does not answer to Donald Trump.
He might think we do, but fortunately his delusions don’t outweigh the Constitution (at least, not yet).
If any of Trump’s lackeys ever tried reading past the Second Amendment, they’d find the concept of checks and balances laid out in black and white.
So, in the unlikely case a certain orange insurrectionist is reading this email:
Congress is a co-equal branch of government, Donald. We serve THE PEOPLE, not the president.
Over the next few weeks, Congressional Republicans will have a choice to make:
- Continue cowering before Dear Leader
- Protect the constitutional powers of the institution they serve
There’s a decent chance we’ll see plenty of chaos in the months to come, and Trump will happily throw gasoline on the fire. Hey, if Congress is in chaos, maybe we won’t notice his nominee for Director of Super-Secret Spy Stuff is Vladimir Putin in a wig!
After all these years of cowardice from the GOP, I wouldn’t bet on courage. But I’ll hold out hope anyway, because our democracy depends on it.
If you can, pitch in a few bucks to help us navigate the new Congress. Those of us who actually want to solve problems need all the help we can get.
Best,
Sean
