Trump ordered to appear for sentencing in hush money case days before he takes office
Judge Juan Merchan has set President-elect Donald Trump’s sentencing in his hush-money case for January 10 — just ten days before he is due to return to the White House. While Merchan indicated the MAGA cult leader wouldn't be jailed, the extraordinary development puts him on course to be the first president to take office convicted of felony crimes. In a written decision, Merchan said he would sentence the former and future president to what’s known as a conditional discharge, in which a case gets dismissed if a defendant avoids rearrest. Something tells us Donald won't be arrested again, no matter what the convicted felon does in or out of office.

Mike Johnson re-elected as House speaker after brief Republican revolt
GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson eked out a razor-thin victory and will retain the gavel after all, after convincing two Republicans who voted against him on the first ballot to change their votes on the second, leaving Kentucky's Thomas Massie, who vowed to vote against Johnson even if tortured, as the only GOP member of Congress to buck the party's leader. The final tally was 218-215, paving the way for the House to certify Trump's electoral victory on Monday, the four year anniversary of the MAGA cult leader's failed insurrection to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Biden ramps up bird flu spending as scientists fret about H5N1 response
As concerns about outbreaks of bird flu and the nation’s response continue to grow, the Biden administration announced Friday that it would ramp up spending to support its efforts. There are currently 66 confirmed human cases reported across 10 states, with the majority reported in California and Colorado. Of the dozens, one case in Louisiana marked the nation’s first severe illness from the virus, which likely mutated inside the patient. However, there has not yet been human-to-human transmission of H5N1. Now more than $300 million will go toward monitoring H5N1 bird flu and regional, state, and local preparedness programs. About a third is allocated for testing, outreach to high-risk populations, and increased surveillance of individuals who have been exposed to infected animals. And, $90 million is being awarded to the Hospital Preparedness Program, which is “the only source of federal funding for health care system readiness.”

Surgeon general calls for new label on drinks to warn Americans of alcohol's cancer risk
Alcohol is a leading cause of cancer, a risk that should be clearly labeled on drinks Americans consume, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy proposed on Friday. Murthy’s advisory comes as research and evidence mounts about the bad effects that alcohol has on human health, but his proposal for a label would require a rare approval from Congress. About 20,000 people die every year from alcohol-related cancer cases, according to Murthy's advisory.

Elon Musk is facing fierce criticism from British parliamentarians after he called for far-right ringleader Tommy Robinson to be released from prison. Robinson, the controversial English Defense League founder whose anti-immigration rallies in the UK attract thousands, was jailed for 18 months last October after he admitted to breaching a court order relating to false claims about a Syrian schoolboy he had made in a documentary. Musk on Thursday approvingly shared the documentary to his hundreds of millions of followers on Twitter.
