H1B Debate Comes to Texas

Over Christmas, the tech wing of the Trump coalition sparked a debate over H-1B visas and legal immigration. For several days the issue was worked out with figures like Elon Musk, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Donald Trump joining in.

One of the benefits of this H-1B debate is that millions of Americans have become aware that a searchable database of H-1B applications exists. You and I can see which companies have replaced Americans with lower-wage foreigners. The database can be found here.

Given this recent fight over H-1B visas, we thought it would be good to give you some information about the sorts of companies using H-1Bs here in DFW. Let's get into it.

Of the top 15 cities nationwide ranked by number of H-1B recipients, Texas cities account for 30% of them. See the chart below!

City

Ranking

Number of Recipients

Austin

#4

over 62,000

Houston

#9

over 50,000

Irving

#10

over 47,000

Dallas

#12

over 44,000

Plano

#13

over 43,000

Once you leave the top 15, Texas begins to drop off. The next highest are the list are Richardson, Frisco, and San Antonio, ranked 36, 37, and 48, respectively. Fort Worth ranks #80, with around 7,000 visa recipients.

Texas has many companies - and some you wouldn't expect - ranked in the top 250 of companies nationwide, ranked by number of H-1B employees. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Tesla, ranked #31
  • AT&T, ranked #130
  • American Airlines, ranked #152
  • Dallas ISD, ranked #189(!)
  • Texas A&M, ranked #225
  • Baylor College of Medicine, ranked #226
  • UT Austin, ranked #240

Even many local entities right here in Fort Worth make substantial use of the H-1B program, including many of our local universities!

  • Fort Worth ISD currently has 9 listings for H-1B visas, including some for English instructors. Apparently, there are no American citizens capable of teaching English to our kids.
  • UT Arlington has 29 visa applications listed on the database, including one for an Assistant Tennis Coach position. Little known fact: we will lose to China if UT Arlington doesn't have the best and the brightest Assistant Tennis Coach.
  • Fort Worth Report is using the H-1B to hire multiple reporters.

There are many others here in Fort Worth, these are just some of the highlights. You can search the database yourself if you'd like to find others!

International Newcomer Academy

Remember our reports last year on Catholic Charities of Fort Worth? Well, they're back - this time with a crossover. Catholic Charities of Fort Worth is working with Fort Worth ISD to bring migrants into our schools.

The International Newcomer Academy (INA) is a school under the FWISD umbrella that is meant exclusively for unassimilated migrant children. You might think that the INA is the place where the vast numbers of Spanish-speaking migrants go to learn English - but that's not really true. What's shocking is that, despite the fact that 40% of FWISD students are enrolled in bilingual English-Spanish instruction, the purpose of the INA is really to serve migrants who don't speak English OR Spanish!

Just as with the other migrant-related activities CCFW engages in, this work is almost entirely funded by the federal government. The Refugee School Impact Program (RSI) is funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) under Alejandro Mayorkas - the same office that gave billions of dollars to CCFW.

The purpose of this grant is to offset the cost to public schools for the influx of various non-English speaking people the Biden admin has flooded into our cities. Remember Springfield, OH (the "eating the cats" episode of 2024)? So many different migrants of various origins had been sent to the city that the school was in need of translators for dozens of obscure languages. The same thing occurs in New York City, and now, apparently, in Fort Worth ISD.

CCFW, in its work with the International Newcomer Academy, offers many services to both FWISD teachers and migrant students. On their "What We Do" page, they claim to teach students and families about "tardiness, truancy, and hygiene."

INA's clientele, according to CCFW's website, can receive English tutoring for up to 5 years, because students tend to speak next to no English on arrival.

It doesn't have to be this way. We're looking forward to January 20th.
