Email from Rep. Van Duyne Happy New Year! Washington, D.C. - It’s been a busy, productive year working to advance our shared values and deliver for North Texas. I wanted to take a moment to share some highlights from the last twelve months: In January, I joined Speaker Johnson in Eagle Pass to see the worsening border crisis. We heard from local law enforcement officers and landowners about the situation on the ground. I look forward to working with the Trump Administration to secure the border and deport criminal illegal aliens. Click here or on the photo below to watch my remarks. Back home, I hosted a luncheon honoring our outstanding Texas-24 veterans. I also had the privilege of presenting the Congressional Gold Medal to the family of Arthur Watson, a WWII Merchant Marine who played a critical role in ensuring supplies made it to the front lines to help defeat the Nazis. In February, I questioned IRS Commissioner Werfel about the agency’s weaponization against hardworking families and small businesses. I hosted several productive roundtable discussions in our district office. First, we brought together local leaders in education to discuss challenges facing teachers and students. Then, I spoke with North Texas medical leaders and signed on to legislation that will prevent cuts to Medicare reimbursement. Our community is home to some of the world’s leading health care providers! In March, I was thrilled to highlight this when I hosted the House Committee on Ways and Means at Global Medical Response in Denton for a field hearing on ensuring resilient emergency medical care. As Chairman of the Small Business Subcommittee on Oversight, I held a hearing to expose destructive federal overregulation that prevents small businesses from accessing capital and to identify viable alternatives such as private financing. I pressed SBA Administrator Guzman about the agency’s misuse of taxpayer dollars and reckless decision to end collection of tens of billions of dollars of fraudulent COVID-era loans. In April, we hosted our inaugural TX-24 D.C. Elementary Fly-In with more than 100 North Texas students and families joining us. From a nighttime tour of the U.S. Capitol to embassy visits and a behind-the-scenes look at the legislative process, it was a special experience. Our 2025 Family Fly-In is coming up in just three months! You can learn more and register by clicking here. As you may know, I had the honor of serving as National Co-Chair of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition. It was great to celebrate our community’s young artists during our annual reception and recognize this year’s winners from our district including grand prize winner Sophia Lou who visited us in D.C. in June! Back in D.C., I helped advance several bills through the Ways and Means Committee to combat Communist China’s exploitative trade practices and support American consumers, workers, and farmers. I was pleased that the End Chinese Dominance of Electric Vehicles in America Act, which I cosponsored, was passed by the full House this year. After months of meetings, debates, and hard work, our 2023-2024 Congressional Youth Advisory Council class graduated! I was so impressed by these bright student leaders. Click here to learn more. I ended the month in a Ways and Means Committee hearing where I demanded answers from Treasury Secretary Yellen about the administration’s plan to raise taxes on working families and their approach of picking “winners and losers” to tilt the scales against American oil and gas production. To kick off the month of May, I invited a Texas-24 small business owner to D.C. during National Small Business Week to showcase his company and discuss challenges facing Main Street. I was glad to introduce him to Speaker Johnson! In June, I hosted our annual Service Academy potluck breakfast to congratulate the Texas-24 students appointed to our military academies and thank our community members who served on our nomination advisory board. It’s a privilege to nominate outstanding young men and women eager to serve our country. Back in Washington, my Ways and Means Committee colleagues and I continued our work to combat rising antisemitism on college campuses and the failures of university leadership to hold students and faculty accountable. Later, I helped advance several pieces of legislation to improve access to health care, including breakthrough treatments for patients in need. At the beginning of July, I held a roundtable discussion at our district office with veteran organizations and advocates to discuss challenges facing our heroes and solutions to help. In August, I hosted my third North Texas job fair at Globe Life Field in Arlington. The stadium was packed with over 25,000 job seekers, 500 employers across all industries, and more than two dozen constituent service organizations ready to provide resources to North Texans! We provided thousands of free backpacks and school supply packs to local families. I was grateful for the chance to celebrate Southlake Fire Chief Mike Starr’s 27 years of service to our community during his retirement ceremony at the end of the month. September was off to an exciting start with the first meeting of our 2024-2025 Congressional Youth Advisory Council. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the more than 80 bright students sitting on this year’s council. It was wonderful to engage so many young readers through our “Beth’s Bookworms” summer reading challenge! I had a great time with the Irving Police Department and community members at National Night Out in October. As part of my effort to address campus antisemitism, I visited my alma mater Cornell University to meet with Jewish students and faculty who have faced serious threats from terrorist sympathizers. I’m investigating the potential removal of tax exempt status for universities that fail to deliver on their obligation to provide a public good. Later in the month, I held a tax roundtable with two dozen local business owners to discuss expiring provisions of the Trump tax cuts that have helped companies grow and reinvest in our communities. I’m working to renew and expand key policies like these to continue supporting our families and job creators. In November, I hosted a veteran recognition event in Irving to honor our Texas-24 heroes! We honored 19 veterans, including 15 from the Vietnam era. I'm looking forward to another great year of delivering for Texas-24! Texas-24 Work of the Week It was an honor to take the oath of office today and begin my third term representing Texas’ 24th Congressional District. Texas-24 Hometown Hero This week's Texas-24 Hometown Hero is Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County for their work to spread holiday cheer to our most vulnerable residents through the Silver Santa Campaign!
