KTLA 5 Video: Drunk driving suspect tells SoCal officer, ‘I’m the DUI tonight’ Hours into 2025, a suspected drunk driver in Murrieta may have already committed the year’s worst gaffe caught by police on video. Shortly after the new year began, an officer “noticed a vehicle swerving across the roadway and initiated a traffic stop to investigate potential DUI” — or a person suspected of driving under the influence, Murrieta police said in a statement. During the stop, which was captured on the officer’s body camera, the suspect said he drove a friend home because “I’m the DUI tonight.” In seeming disbelief, the officer responded: “You’re the DUI tonight?” “Yes sir,” the driver confirmed. “Do you mean to say the ‘DD’?” the officer asked, referring to the abbreviation for a designated driver who would remain sober while others imbibed. The driver paused, apparently at a loss for words, and meekly apologized. Later in the encounter, the suspect admitted to consuming alcohol and underwent field sobriety tests, police video showed. He nearly fell several times while simultaneously attempting to walk in a straight line and count. Ultimately, he was arrested for DUI and taken to jail, Murrieta police said. Los Angeles Times BWC: 3 injured, including Fla. officer, after suspected DUI driver slams into parked cruiser The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released body camera footage from a drunk driving crash that led to multiple injuries and damage to a police vehicle, Action News Jax reported. The Dec. 26 crash took place on the Mathews Bridge, where a JSO officer was assisting two motorists in changing a tire on a disabled vehicle, according to the report. The officer’s patrol car was parked behind the vehicles with its emergency lights activated. As the tire change was being completed, a pickup truck collided with the rear of the police car, causing one of the motorists to be pinned between two vehicles. Video shows the officer jumping away from the cars as the pinned man cried, “My leg! My leg!” The officer opened the door to the pickup truck and instructed the driver to step on the brake. Both the driver and a passenger turned out to be unconscious, according to the report. The officer applied the brake himself before calling in the crash on his radio and asking if the occupants of the cars were alright. The crash resulted in serious injuries to two people and minor injuries to the officer, according to the report. The driver now faces six counts of DUI with property damage and/or personal injury, as well as charges for driving under the influence, careless driving and failing to move over for an emergency vehicle. PoliceOne ‘I would do it over again’: SWAT officer makes stunning return to duty 2 months after losing eye in shooting After losing an eye in a shooting, one officer stunned his colleagues by returning to an elite unit after only two months, the San Antonio Express-News reported. SWAT officer Rhett Shoquist had a brush with death during a police pursuit on Aug. 24, 2023, when a bullet struck his right eye, according to the report. A third-generation law enforcement officer and Marine veteran, Shoquist had been a member of the elite tactical unit for less than three months. The pursuit involved a man who was armed with an AR-style rifle and fleeing in a blue Mitsubishi Lancer driven by a woman he had allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint, according to the report. As Shoquist and his partner, SWAT Officer Adam Rule, pursued the man, the gunman fired repeatedly through the rear window. Bullets ricocheted off the police cruiser before one pierced the windshield, striking Shoquist in the eye. In the adrenaline-fueled chaos, Shoquist, certain he was going to die, thought of his wife and two young sons. But his partner, also injured by shrapnel, reassured him: the bullet had exited through Shoquist’s cheek, sparing his brain, according to the report. The sunglasses Shoquist wore — a rare choice for him — deflected the bullet’s trajectory, a small decision that saved his life.
