Overview: Happy New Year to our Washington Weekly readers. Today the 119th Congress begins (See CCUSA's priorities for the new Congress below in the paragraph titled "119th Congress"). Members will be sworn in for both houses, but the House of Representatives will first elect a speaker, with Mike Johnson most likely to retain that position. Top priorities for Republicans, who have slim majorities in the Senate and the House, include immigration and border security and extending the first Trump administration's tax cuts. House Republicans have planned a special "retreat"this weekend to discuss how to move forward with their agenda.

Trivia
Q. What distinguishes Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton among saints from the United States?
Please send your answers to the right answer ([link removed]): Blessing the front entrance of the home on the Feast of the Epiphany, traditionally on 1/6; which is now always celebrated on the Sunday between 1/2--1/8.So in 2025 it is January 5.The Epiphany commemorates the visit of the Magi (Three Kings traditionally named: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar). Marking the front door/lintel with chalk (20+C+M+B 25) and invoking God's blessing on the household and all those we welcome into our home during this year.Epiphany means "a revealing" so we are called to witness (reveal) Jesus to those we live with and those who visit through our words and actions.
