Pennsylvania is one of only seven states in the entire country that votes for all of our judges and justices in partisan elections.
November 2025, voters in PA will have the power to elect judges or remove judges and justices for the bench in nonpartisan retention election voting.
Three PA Supreme Court Justices will likely be on the ballot for retention voting next Fall. |

|
On Thursday, January 30th at 6:30-8:00PM, Why Courts Matter - Pennsylvania and affiliated organization New Pennsylvania Project will host their second virtual town hall on the importance of our state and federal courts.
The event’s goal is to ensure that our communities are fully informed about the importance of having fair and independent state and federal courts, so that voters are compelled to vote and protect the courts' independence. |

Pennsylvania Supreme Court retention could be the next ugly political fight
"After a bruising Presidential election and a slew of fights over control of Congress and the state legislature, maybe you thought 2025 would at least be largely free of bitterly partisan election battles. Don’t get your hopes up. Pennsylvania voters will decide next year whether three sitting state Supreme Court justices should remain on the bench for another 10-year term. Those retention votes usually get little attention — but observers say they could become yet another partisan battleground."
2024’s Most Significant State Constitutional Cases
"There has been growing public interest in the potential of state courts and constitutions to provide greater protections to people within their borders than what’s offered under the federal Constitution. In 2024, multiple high-profile cases wound through state judiciaries, addressing reproductive rights, democracy, criminal justice, and much more. Against this backdrop, we asked some the country’s leading legal thinkers to weigh in on the question: What is a state constitutional case you think our readers should know about from this past year, and why? Their responses painted a complex but often hopeful picture for the future of civil rights."
Biden Vetoes Bill That Would Add 63 New Federal Judges Over Next Decade "President Joe Biden vetoed a bipartisan bill that would add 63 new federal judges over the next decade, explaining that the bill “fails to resolve key questions” about the allocation of judges and senior status judges." |

We were founded as a voting rights organization led by community leaders across the Commonwealth dedicated to centering underrepresented and underserved communities to embrace their power.
NPPEF ensures full participation in the democratic process through civic education and year-round engagement by centering Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, immigrant communities and the youth - with intention - as they are the least represented and most impacted by decisions our government is making. |

New Congress takes office tomorrow — what this means for voting rights
"The newly-elected 119th Congress will be sworn in Friday and the GOP — which has repeatedly targeted voting rights — is set to control both chambers for the first time since 2019. Republicans will retain their majority in the House of Representatives, albeit with a smaller margin — 219 Republicans and 215 Democrats. This is the tightest margin in nearly a century. " Previous election doubters become defenders amid Trump, McCormick victories
"Lawmakers return to the Capitol on January 7, and because 2025 is relatively a sleepy election year, reforms like pre-canvassing of mail-in ballot envelopes, or voter IDs could become possibilities."
The Votebeat stories that made a mark on us in 2024
"Votebeat is a nonprofit news organization reporting on voting access and election administration across the U.S.. Our coverage explored conspiracy theories, language barriers, election misinformation, and flaws in the system." |
