John –
A few days ago, we told you about the damaging plans that the GOP has for the Post Office. But that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to their extreme agenda.
Congressional Republicans have committed to cutting $2.5 trillion this year. And many aren't shy about where those cuts should come from.
- Missouri Congressman Mark Alford said: "It's going to mean cuts to the 24 percent of the discretionary spending that we have, and it's also going to mean looking long-term at the front end of some programs like Social Security and Medicare."
- Georgia Congressman Richard McCormick said: "We're gonna have to have some hard decisions. We've gotta bring in the Democrats and talk about Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare. There's hundreds of billions of dollars to be saved, and we know how to do it."
- Utah Senator Mike Lee recently posted a long Twitter diatribe about how Social Security is a "Ponzi scheme."
- Kentucky Congressman Brett Guthrie (who's about to chair the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee) calls himself "a big proponent of per capita allotments," which are also known as Medicaid caps.
The signals are unmistakable: Republicans are going to target Americans' retirement security and the healthcare subsidies that working families rely on.
We have to be able to organize and make sure folks – especially those in bellwether Midwestern districts – understand the immense stakes of the coming budget fights. Today, with the new Republican Congress being sworn in, those fights are just around the corner.
That's why we're asking supporters like you to pitch in whatever you can. We’re $582 away from meeting our budget goal that will help us hit the ground running this year. Will you help us close the gap today?
Onward,
Midwest Majority PAC
