350 Wisconsin Meeting
Monday, January 6, 7 - 8:10pm
Zoom
Rights of Nature
Anahkwet (Guy Reiter)
Menikahnaehkem
Rights of Nature is a global movement that explores the concept that natural ecosystems, species, and elements, such as rivers, forests, and mountains, have inherent rights to exist, thrive, and evolve. This idea challenges traditional legal systems that treat nature as property to be exploited, advocating instead for laws that recognize nature’s intrinsic value.
Our speaker, Anahkwet (Guy Reiter), will cover key principles, such as the right of nature to be protected from harm, the right of ecosystems to regenerate, and the right of communities to defend nature from environmental degradation. He will also present case studies of the successful integration of Rights of Nature into legal frameworks, such as in Ecuador and New Zealand, and will examine the growing movement to enshrine these rights in national, state, tribal, and international law.
WHAT: 350 Wisconsin Monthly Meeting: Rights of Nature
WHEN: Monday, January 6, 2025, 7:00–8:10pm
ONLINE VIA ZOOM: Register in advance for the meeting here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting via computer, tablet, or smartphone.
Anahkwet (Guy Reiter) is a traditional Menominee who resides on the Menominee Reservation. He’s the Executive Director of a Menominee Indian community organization called Menikahnaehkem. He is also a community organizer, activist, author, amateur archaeologist, and lecturer. Anahkwet has organized a lot of events that have uplifted the human condition and demonstrated how enriching the Menominee culture is. He has lectured at universities on the connection Menominee Indians have to the Menominee River. He has also written articles for Environmental Health News and other publications. When Anahkwet isn’t working, you’ll find him enjoying time with his partner and their children. Anahkwet is an advocate for Indigenous people everywhere.
